Analysis Of Magazine Advert
This magazine advert is advertising Rihanna's song called "Hard" which is off her album R rated which is why there is a big R above Rihanna's name. The photo consists of light colours, the video for her song "Hard" has Rihanna in army type outifts, the photo of Rihanna has her wearing an army type hat with a huge jacket on with white gloves and sun glasses. The sun glasses reflect the sand off the floor. Rihanna is wearing dark red lipstic which could indicate sophistication and she is pouting but not towards the camera.
The R is the main focus on this magazine advert which is advertising what her album is called. The R is very sharp because the songs and videos for her album are very R rated which is what her album is called. The R is in a light brown with white around the edges which makes it stand out more. The colours contrast with Rihanna's outfit. Rihanna's name is in white and is bold as people need to know who the advert is about if they do not know who the photograph is.
The sunglasses Rihanna is wearing are gold and very shiny this is a convention of an R&B artist because it represents "bling", also Rihanna is wearing very sparkly ear rings which also represent a convention of an R&B artist. Rihanna is wearing very dark red lipstick, this is showing her feminism as the rest of her image on this album cover could be said as not very feminem.

Edited Photos
These are possible photo's for the inside of my digipak. I decided that I wanted a medium close up shot of my artist inside my digipak as I have studied R&B artists' digipak's and noticed that they all have medium close ups. I also wanted my image to be really bright to make it stand out to the reader so I edited on Photoshop to make it brighter.

Animatic
This is my animatic. This shows the images of my storyboard put together with my chosen song. These pictures are not precise as when I started my filming I decided to change my idea's to make it better, I have reduced the timing of the shots so that they are not so long which will make my video more effective and have more shots and angles.
First Draft Of My Album Cover
This is my first draft of my Front cover of my digiapak. I decided to use a medium close up because I have studied other R&B artists albums and they all have medium close up shots. I also decided to go for a more natural look instead of a sexual revealing image because the song I have chosen is very slow and sad so I wanted my photo to fit in with the song. The photo is bright which will make it stand out for my audience to buy. I decided to have my artist wearing a boob tube top so that you could see the top of her body, I also wanted the audience to be able to see that she is actually wearting a top, that is why I have made sure that you can see a little bit of her top.
I decided to use the colour orange for the name of my artist and the name of my album because I think it works well with my image and it is a soft and light colour. I decided to use the name Love on the rocks for my album because the song I have chosen is about the artist being in love but the relationship isnt working so I decided to base the name of my album on my song choice.
I was aiming for a natural and sophisticated look for my album cover. I wanted my album cover to stand out to the audience because my album cover is bright and natural. I think my audience would like to see an artist not covered in make up but a very natural and sophisticated photo, instead of having a sex appeal album cover. My album cover won't be aimed at males, my album cover will be mostly aimed at females.
Pictures Unedited
These are possible photos for my digipak. These photos have not been edited on Photoshop yet. I decided to have my actress against a white background as in my music video my artist sings into the camera infront of a white background. I also used a lamp to shine on my artist to make my image look much brighter and I think this worked really well. I decided to use medium close ups of my artist as this is showing the reader a close up of the artist and most R&B female artitsts have medium close up shots on their album covers.

Pictures Of My Location
The two pictures of the field above are were I shot my footage of my artist and her "boyfriend" looking happily in love but I filmed this before the snow but took my photographs whilst there was snow on the ground.
The image of the house is were I shot the inside footage of my music video and I also shot some footage outside of my artist and her "boyfriend" fighting.
Ideas For My CD
I want my CD to have the colours black, orange and white, i think these colours will work well together.

Ideas For My Digipak
I like the idea of how sad Rihanna is looking on this album, it is different to other R&B album covers. The background of this album cover is very plain, this is showing that the main focus is on Rihanna's face. This seems like a very natural and sophisticated photo.
I am basing my photgraphs for my digipak on these two album covers of Rihanna because I like the way the photos look very natural and sophisticated. I also like how up close the artist is to the camera.
On the middle part of the digipak I will have a medium close up of my artist, the other cover on the right hand side will also have an image of my artist, this will be a close up of my artist. The CD will cover the image of my artist in the middle of the digipak but when you remove the CD there will be an image of my artist. On the left hand side of the digipak there will be a low angle shot of my artist which will have text on. The bottom picture of Rihanna's album is quite misty, she is pouting and looking straight into the camera. This album cover is a main focus on Rihanna's face. Her make up is done very natural with pink lipstick instead of having lots of make up like other R&B artists wear for their album covers.

Location List
Ella Field - empty field
Semi detached house - lots of houses nearby, busy area
My location list goes well with my idea for music video as using my house is practical as I can use it at any time. My house is the main location for my music video, but the mostly used shot is of my actress behind a white background singing into the camera which is filmed at my house.

The Brief
Aswell as creating a music video, I will be creating a cover for the song release as part of a digipak (CD/DVD package) and I will also be creating a magazine advertisement for the digipack (CD/DVD package)
The Beatles Digipak
This digipak of The Beatles is all one colour which is sepia to indicate that The Beatles are an old band and the album represents that by the colour of it. As the colour could be seen as
old fashioned.
Photograph
The photograph of The Beatles is a medium shot, the image is just a photograph of the band looking straight into the camera with a little smile. The photograph is in black, the photo is an old photo of the band so it will not be of high quality which goes well with the idea of the album being old fashioned.
The back of the digipak is full of black writing which will be writing about The band and their albums. The front cover also has the band's name in the top left hand corner, the text is quite big and bold so that the reader know's who that album covers belong to. The colour is the same colour for the full cover, it consists of brown and black which signifies old colours as the band are an old band.
Text
The text on the back of the CD cover is in black writing, this will be writing about the band but it will also have the names of the band's songs which will be on the CD. There also may be writing about the actual band such as information about making their songs etc.
Beyonce's Digipak
Beyonce's digipak contains lots of photographs of herself.
Photographs
The photograph of Beyonce is a low angle shot. Beyonce is wearing a black latex outfit which shows off her body, which is showing a sex appeal. Beyonce's outfit is black, the colour black represents dark and death. The way Beyonce is standing shows her body outline because the outfit is really tight on her. The low angle shot lets the reader see Beyonce's full body which will appeal to male audiences because Beyonce is a sex appeal. The cover on the left hand side also includes pictures of her other albums, this will be so her other albums get promoted so that the audience can see them and buy them.
Behind the CD on the second cover there is another photograph of Beyonce this is so that when the reader takes the CD out they can see another photograph of Beyonce. The colours throughout the album are black and gold, these colours could indicate wealth as gold represents money and glamour.
Text
The text on the left hand side of the cover is in white writing on a black background, using these colours makes the text stand out as white stands out against a black background.
Rihanna's Digipak
Rihanna's digipak includes a medium shot of Rihanna in a skimpy outfit which looks like she is in a bikini with an open top over it. This is a convention of an R&B artist as female artists tend to wear skimpy and sexy outfits to appeal to males. The colour tends to stay the same throughout the digipak, the colours consist of blacks, organge/gold colours with Rihanna in a creamy dress type outfit.
Photographs
The photo on the right hand side is a low angle shot of Rihanna looking straight into the camera looking down, this is showing power. Rihanna has her hair over one eye which may indicate she has something to hide. The other picture of Rihanna is another low angle shot, this picture shows Rihanna's body from a low angle so the reader can see Rihanna's body well, this picture is appealing to males as she is wearing a very skimpy outfit, this picture is a sex appeal. On the bottom left picture there is three pictures of Rihanna's other albums, this will be promoting her other albums. Most of the image on the left is covered in white writing.
The writing on the left hand side is writing about Rihanna's albums, this will be so that the reader can read about her albums and the story behind them. A lot of R&B digipaks have writing about their albums as most of them just include photographs of the artist.

Beyonce Album Cover
Photograph
The image is a medium shot of Beyonce.
Beyonce is in a skimpy outfit, this is clearly for male audience as this would appeal to men. Beyonce is wearing a very sparkly bling outfit, this is a convention of R&B artists as R&B artists like to wear bling outfits to show their wealth. She is also wearing dangly sparkling ear rings which is also another convention. The image shows Beyonce pouting looking straight towards the camera, this shows sex appeal as she is not smiling she is posing very sexual. The way her arms are show that she has a curvey figure which is also showing sex appeal, most of the image is sex appeal for her male audience.
Text
The text on the album cover is in the bottom right of the album. The reason they put the text at the bottom of the album is so that the audience can pay more attention to the image of Beyonce as she looks very beautifull. The text is in white writing.
Background
The background is vey plain on this album, it is a light blue colur which works well with Beyonce's silver outfit.
This album cover is clearly a sexual cover as Beyonce is not wearing many clothing and has her body out which is the main focus for this album cover.
Rihanna Album Cover
Photograph
The photo is a low angle shot of the artist, Rihanna is seen in black and white to make the album look sophisticated. Rihanna has been photoshopped in as you can tell because of the edging around the body. The way Rihanna is standing is showing she has power as she is looking down towards the camera. Also the way she is stood and the place were her hands are appeal to boys as the photo shows how curvy she is. Rihanna is in a white long dress, because she is in a white dress it stands out because it is in black and white. Rihanna has her lips open a tiny bit, this is portraying the album to be a kind of sexy album cover. Having her hair across one of her eyes shows the audience that she is hiding something which may be that she is hiding being bad or good because the album is called "good girl gone bad". Rihanna shows in her image that she is wearing sparkly dangling ear rings, this shows bling and wealth just like the album cover of Beyonce's album.
Text
The font of the text is very bold and big so that the audience know's who the album cover belongs to. The font is also in red, the colour red indicates danger since the album is called "good girl gone bad" suggests that she is dangerously bad. Also using the colour white contrasts well with red. The text of the word Rihanna is bigger than all the other piece of writing, the writing goes across the full front cover album.
Background
The background to this album cover is a blue colour, I don't think that this colour works very well with red and white. I think they used the colour blue to make the album cover stand out as not many artists have there album cover this colour.
This album cover represents sophistication and sex appeal due to how Rihanna is stood and how she is looking at the camera.
Problems with filming!
I need to film some shots outdoors but it has been snowing which stops me from shooting my music video because I have already shot some of my video outside and cannot film because of the snow.

Cast List
My cast list consists of two characters ; Jessica Hunt and James Green.
I decided to use these two as Jess only lives a few minutes away from me so it is very easy to oganise when to film as she doesn't live far. They are both very reliable I know this because I know them both very well. I also know that jess would be confident enough to perform infront of a camera because I used Jess as a model for my AS work and she photographed really well.
I decided to use James (my boyfriend) because he gets along very well with Jess and I knew that he would be confident enough to take part in my music video. James won't be in the video that much but he will be a few times.
Jess will be the main character in my music video, James will be the ex boyfriend of Jess' who has cheated on her.

Conventions Of R&B
R & B originated in the 1940s. R & B is short for rhythm and blues but everyone know shortens it to R & B as it is a newer version of soul and funk music. R & B is a music genre which combines elements of hip hop, R & B and soul music. R & B is one of the most popular genres of music. The most popular R & B artists are Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey. Most music videos of R & B artists include lots of “bling” as artists want to show off their wealth by showing there expensive jewelry. R & B artists like to show off what they have such as expensive cars or that they have lots of woman as usually in male artists video’s they have lots of pretty dancers surrounding them. Wealth describes R & B artists as they want to show the audience that they are very wealthy. R & B artists usually have a performance video instead of a narrative, male R & B artists usually have girls dancing around in not many clothes, this is a typical performance video from an R & B artist. In music videos of R & B artists you usually see the performer throughout the video, they like to have lots of close up and medium close up shots to show off the performer and also so that the audience can see the performer close up. In male artists music videos they usually like to get there body out by usually having their top off in part of the video this is to show their audience that they like there body and they want to appeal to female audiences. Usually male artists like to wear jeans if they have their tops off so that you can see their boxers, they will also usually have a designer belt which is an advertisement of the product. Lots of male artists have tattoo’s and usually there tattoo’s are seen on their video.
Female artists wear minimal clothing on their music videos so that they appeal to males watching their video’s because they are wanting to be seen as attractive so they wear hardly any clothing. Usually hair and makeup is very outstanding and are usually seen as wearing dark bold colours to show off their features. Some female artists like to wear red lipstick to show power. R & B females love to wear very high heels to show off their legs as they are wearing something short. However some female artists like to wear trainers for choreographed performances in their video. Most female artists like to wear big ear rings and necklaces, usually when female artists wear lots of jewellery they are breaking gender stereotypes because it is usually male artists who wear lots of jewellery. Female artists usually use a narrative in their video that links with the lyrics of the song. Women usually use males for the videos to have a negative reflection. The often use males to express their feelings. Usually women use males for songs that are about a male cheating in a relationship. Males can also be used for a positive reflection as shown in romantic songs.
Slow songs such as my chosen song Rihanna- Take a bow usually do not have as much nudity as sexual R & B music. My song is about breaking up, which usually R & B artists wear dark clothing to show emotion. A lot of natural makeup is used to convey the sense of natural beauty because there is usually a lot of close ups of the artists face. My song has a narrative but not many R & B female artists have a narrative to their video. Songs about breaking up usually take place in a plain black room which has very minimal items in the room because the songs tend to concentrate on the artists by using close up shots to show significant figure expression.
Most R & B artists are African Americans, this is mainly because they founded R & B. Some R & B male artists like to dress in gangster like clothing, this signifies R & B and also represents R & B because other genres such as pop and many others, male artists do not dress in gangster clothing. Gangster clothing is big baggy clothing which hangs off the artist, this is also showing the artists wealth as usually the clothing is expensive as usually the clothes are designer label. In most R & B video’s there is usually a dance routine performed in the video, it can range from break dancing to hip hop, these dance moves represent the genre as no other type of genre can relate to break dancing. A lot of music videos of R & B artists involve the music video being set in a nightclub or a party type of atmosphere. Also some R & B artists like to use the idea of using “the streets” usually if the artist wants to use this idea they film a rough area as R & B artists like to represent that they are tough characters and that you wouldn’t want to mess with them.
R & B has a wide range of audience, most people who listen to R & B music are between the ages of 13-25. The type of socio-economic group who would listen to this type of genre would be working class and middle class. It is usually females that are attracted to R&B music because female R&B artists stereotypically make songs about being in love or heartbroken, this is what will appeal to teenage girls and young adults.

Planning Of My Music Video
I started planning my music video by first deciding what song I wanted to use as choosing a song was one of the most important things to do. I chose my song which is Rihanna- Take a bow. I could then start thinking about idea's what I could do for my music video. I decided that I would use a narrative instead of having my music video as a performance. I could then start thinking about my narrative which I can use throughout my video. I chose my narrative to consist of a boy and girl in a relationship but the girl finds out that her boyfriend has been cheating on her.
I then looked at other music videos that could relate to my music video to get some idea's. I then started to create my story board, my story board took a while for me to create as after over a minute I couldn't think of anything which I could do but after looking at other music video's I got a few idea's and eventually finished my storyboard. After I created my storyboard I took photo's of all of my images and uploaded them onto the computer so that I can create my animatic.
On the 7th November I booked a camera from Ray and took the camera home to start filming for my music video. I decided to use my best friend Jess for my main actress as I know she is reliable and only lives a few minutes away from me and also I wanted to use Jess as I used her for my AS work when taking photo's for my music magazine. I knew that Jess would be a good actress as she is confident enough to sing into the camera which I needed as lots of my shots in my video involve her singing into the camera. I also decided to use my boyfriend James as I also know that he is very reliable, he will be the ex boyfriend of Jess who has cheated on her. I also took a camera on the 10th November to film as it was too dark to video on the 7th as I left it too late to video because it got dark very early which means that I wouldn't be able to get good video footage as the camera's that I am using do not work well in the dark.
I watched my footage on the computer and realised that my footage was not good quality as my clips were not long enough so i could edit them. I also realised that the lighting was too dark on some scenes so next time I film I will get lots of lighting so that my footage is not dark.
I filmed again on the 22nd November, I decided to re-shoot my shots of Jess just singing straight into the camera as the ones I did before were too dark so this time I decided to re-shoot these shots in my bathroom as it had lots of lighting, I also used lamps to make it brighter and it worked very well. I also shot the image of James laying on the sofa checking his phone but it has no messages. I also had to put all the lights on and get extra lightening to make it brighter. I have not been able to carry on with my filming as it has been snowing which is stopping me from filming as I have to shoot my video outside and I have already shot some of my video outside. Since I have not been able to carry on with my filming I have been doing research, I have been analysing album covers which will help me when I will be creating my digipak.

Pictures From My Story Board
These are a few pictures from my storyboard which I created myself, this storyboard will help me throughout making my music video as I will keep referring back to my storyboard when I am filming my video. It is very important to have a storyboard because when your filming you can keep referring to your storyboard which doesn't delay time when your filming because you know exactly what you need to film. A lot of my shots are medium close up shots and close ups, I have used these shots throughout my video because the conventions of R&B music videos have lots of medium close ups and close ups.
Creating a storyboard allows me to know what shot and how long the shot will last for so I can start filming without having to mess about thinking about what shots I want.

My Song Choice
The song I have decided to choose is Rihanna - Take A Bow. I decided to choose this song because the song has a very good narrative to it and I think I can create a music video to fit the narrative.
The type of genre my song choice is, is a mixture of Pop and R & B, these are very popular types of genre so my audience for my music video will be people who like R & B and Pop music.
Rihanna has a wide variety of people who listen to her music so I wanted to choose a song which appeals to lots of different people and also Rihanna's music is very popular and my song is very well known.
My music video will last approximatly 3 minutes and 44 seconds which will give me plenty of time so i can create my music video to show that it has a strong narrative.

My Target Audience
My target audience for my music video will be mostly females but maybe some males too beause most of Rihanna's songs are targeted for females. The age of my target audience will be between 13 - 25, this is a big gap from 13 to 25 but I think my target audience will be between these ages because lots of people between them ages listen to Rihanna's music. My video will be mostly targeted to females as the song is to do with a couple breaking up and more girls tend to listen to songs about break ups more than males do. My target audience is between the age of 13-25 because most R&B music is targeted for them particular ages.
The type of socio-economic group that would listen to my music would be middle class and working class because my song choice is R & B and these types of socio-economic groups listen to this type of genre.

Rihanna - Unfaithful
http://tiny.cc/6vz3l
The video starts with lots of scenarios in the first minute of the video, with some quiet music in the background that keeps repeating. This could be seen as Rihanna having flashbacks from the past with the guy that also plays in the video as what could be seen as her boyfriend. As the video reaches 53 seconds, the music plays louder, this shows the start of the song. As the music has just started again, there are cuts from scene to of Rihanna being intimate with a different guy to her boyfriend in the video. In these flashbacks she is seen smiling and being happy, this is a short montage. The lyrics start and she comes out from a black curtain looking down and unhappy. Rihanna is also dressed in a black fitted dress, the colour black is seen throughout the video. The colour black may be representing that Rihanna is in a dark place and feeling sad as the lyrics to the song show that Rihanna has been cheating on her boyfriend. Rihanna is based in a stage area at the beginning of the area. As the song leads up to the chorus the lyrics state that she is going to be breaking someone's heart, and feels sad about it. The video then cuts to flashbacks of her and the man again, reflecting on her sadness and that she feels guilt. In the video, Rihanna is going along with what seems like a relationship and she doesn't want to carry it on anymore, this is shown throughout the video as Rihanna doesn't smile at any moment of time through the video, this shows the audience that she is not happy. The video has a narrative where the video is about her and a man that could be her boyfriend, she feels guilty about being with him when she is seeing other people as well. She wants to tell him but she feels too guilty about it and doesn't want to hurt him. The narrative is pretty clear throughout the whole video due to how Rihanna acts in the video because she is all in black and never smiles because the song is a sad song. The video consists of lots of medium close ups, this shows Rihanna to her audience as lots of people who watch music video's want to watch and see the actual artist. Medium close ups can also show the artist's emotion which this video has lots of emotion in.
The video and lyrics of the song is about a woman who is in a relationship with a man but is secretly having an affair with another man. It is not usually seen for woman to cheat on their other half, usually it is portrayed that a man will cheat on his girlfriend so this song shows a different side.

Madonna - Vogue
http://tiny.cc/a3z6b
At the start of Madonna's music video it is unveiled by two feathers which can be represented as a kind of showbiz prop. Madonna's music video is black and white throughout the entire video this is to make the video look more old fashioned to make it classy. The men and women dancers are all dressed in black with smart suit's on, this shows that the video is showing high class people. Madonna can be referred to as Marilyn Monroe as she appears to dress and look like Monroe, this shows that Madonna is saying to her audience that she is as famous as Marilyn Monroe. Madonna is dressed in a long white dress with blonde hair pinned back which represents Monroe. The poses which Madonna does relates to famous portraits of famous stars such as Monroe and Katharine Hepburn. This video is of a performance by Madonna were as a lot of video's have a narrative and a performance but this video does not have a narrative. In Madonna's video she dances infront of the camera with other male dancers, Madonna wants to show the audience that she can do a choreographed dance routine. This video has lots of close up shots of Madonna which shows off the artist which the audience will want to see. Close ups also show Madonna's beauty as in this video she has perfect pale complexion. Also Madonna seems to be more outstanding in the video as she has more lighting than the other characters this is done so the audience can tell she is the main performer. There is lots of tracking shots in this video, this makes the video feel more real and so the audience can understand the video more.
In this video Madonna shows her own design and style which is the bra which looks like it has cones, this is showing her individuality which Madonna wants to show her audience. Madonna's video has no colour, all the dancers and Madonna is either in black or white. Madonna also can relate as Bette Davis as she has the blonde short hair and was a famous actress years ago. Madonna mentions in her song about famous people such as Monroe, Bette Davis, Greta Garbo and DiMaggio, these are all famous actresses from years ago who have the same style which Madonna represents in this video. The video relates to the look of films and photography from The Golden Age of Hollywood and also contains statues and different pieces of art work which recalls the look of The Golden Age of Hollywood.
The words in Madonna's song say "It makes no difference if you're black or white
If you're a boy or a girl" this is showing that Madonna believes in equal opportunities.

Michael Jackson - Thriller
http://tiny.cc/5b8lt
In this video Michael Jackson presents a short film which turns into a music video.
The video is almost 14 minutes long which is very long for a music video, normal music video's last for about 3:30 minutes.
The video starts with the title "Michael Jacksons' Thriller" which is in big bold red writing to make the title stand out, using the colour red means danger. The video then cuts to Michael and his girlfriend in a car which runs out of petrol in a dark wooded area, this represents a horror as something like this scenario would happen in a horror movie. Michael announces that he is "different" and scary like music starts to play as the camera cuts to a full moon appearing in the sky. A full moon can be related to werewolves which then Michael turns into. Michael then chases his girlfriend as he is now a werewolf then it cuts to the cinema which turns out that Michael and his girlfriend are sat watching the film. Michael's actual song doesn't start until over 4 minutes. Michael then starts singing to his girlfriend whilst walking down a dark alleywhich is very misty which represents that something scary may happen. Michael's individuality is also presented in this video as he is wearing black trousers with white socks which Michael was well known for because it was Michael's original idea and something which he used to do all the time in his performances. Michael and his girlfriend walk past a graveyard which is full of smoke which in the real world a grave yard would not typically be surrounded by smoke, this is effective though as it makes it seem like a scary place. Graveyard's are typically seen as a scary place to be on a night time. As the zombie's crawl out of the ground it makes the video alot more scarier as the zombie's are dressed scary looking with lots of make up to make them look really old and ugly.
Also this video is well known for the dance routine as it is one of the best well known choregraphy. This video is very famous for it's dance and is included in films and programmes now even though the video was made years ago. This video is a performance of Michael as he dances for a period of time in the video but Michael also plays a character in his video as he plays somebody else and because he turns into a werewolf. This video is one of the most famous videos in the world.
This video has a very long narrative, Michael's audience would be both females and males and the age of them would be young adults and over. This video would not be suitable for young children as they may get scared by it. There is lots of medium shots throughout this video, medium shots and close ups make things seem more intense and Michael would want his audience to feel the intensity as the video is like a short horror.

History Of Music Videos
The first music video was created in 1894. Sheet music publishers ran the music business, Edward B.Marks and Joe Stern hired electrician George Thomas and a variety of performers to promote sales of their song The Little Lost Child. George Thomas projected a series of still images on a screen at the same time with live performances, this is what became a popular form of entertainment known as the illustrated song. This has been termed as the first music video.
In 1926, many musical short films were produced. Vitaphone shorts (1926-30) which were produced by Warner Brod featured many bands and vocalists. The series entitled Spooney Melodies was the first true musical video series. The short films were approximatly six minutes long, they also featured art deco style animations and backgrounds combined with film of the performer singing the song. These series of short films are considered to be the earliest music videos.
Another early form of music videos were one-song films called "Promotional Clips" made in the 1940s for the visual jukebox. These were short films of musical selections. Soundies were then invented, these were an early version of music videos. Soundies were three minute musical films produced in New York between 1940 and 1946, they included short dance sequencs. The last soundie was released in March 1947. The short films were displayed on a film jukebox, in nightclubs, bars, restaurants, factory lounges and amusement centers.
Musical films were another important start to music videos. Several well-known music videos have imitated the style of classic Hollywood musicals from the 1930s to the 1950s. The best-known example is Madonna's 1985 video for Material Girl. Several of Michael Jackson's videos show the influence of the dance sequences in classic Hollywood musicals.
In 1956 Fine Arts Films recorded the event of a live orchestra then in 1957 Tony Bennett was filmed performing whilst his recording of "Stranger in Paradise". This film was distributed to and played by UK and US television stations. The rise of popular music was because of the rise of television as the format allowed for new stars to be exposed.
In 1964 The Beatles starred in their first feature film A Hard Day's Night. It in black and white and was presented as a mock documentary, it was structured as a musical fantasia with innovative musical sequences. The musical sequences created the basic templates with countless promo clips and music videos were modelled.
In 1965 The Beatles started to make promotional clips which were known as "filmed inserts" for distribution and broadcasted in other countries. This was so the band could promote their record releases withour having to make in-person appearances. The Beatles videotapes 10 promo films, two of the songs were aired in the US in 1966. Many of the clips were aired on "Top of the Pops" . Two more were released to accompany the CD.
The promotional clips for "Strawberry Fields Forever" and "Penny Lane" made in 1967 took the the promotional film format to a new level. The directors used dramatic lighting and unusual camera angles. This reflected that it was impossible for the group to perform live as these clips were studio masterpieces. These mini-films illustrated the songs in an artful manner rather than trying to simulate a performance or a narrative or plot.
In 1974 Australian television shows developed the music video genre. After developing it the creaters relocated to the UK in 1970, Russel Mulcahy made successful music videos for British artists. His early video was XTC's "Making Plans For Nigel (1979) and his video for The Buggles "Video Killed The Radio Star" 1979, this became the first music video played on MTV in 1981.
The British TV show Top of the Pops began playing music videos in the 1970s. A good video would increase a song's sale as viewers would get to see the video a week later. In 1980, David Bowie got his first UK number one in nearly a decade with his promo for "Ashes to Ashes".
In 1981, the US video channel MTV launched. In the 1980s music videos grew to play a central role in popular music marketing. Many acts such as Adam and the Ants, Duran Duran and Madonna owed a great deal of success to the consturction and appeal of their music video's.
Music video's are now very important to artists and bands. Music video's are essential to the music industry as viewer's can watch there favourite perfomer's perform in there own video on YouTube.
